The weather was not completely unkind to Big Tree Night. It poured with rain during the set up and later during the evening, but for the main part of the event itself, the clouds cleared away and the stars came out and the Big Tree looked fabulous! Children clasped hands with their parents, avoiding large puddles on the High Street as they looked earnestly for a view of Santa.

In this issue we celebrate the success of Shepperton at the recent Campaign for Courtesy and also the Spelthorne in Bloom awards. We sadly bring news of the death of Ian Squire, local optician in Shepperton.
As more shops and the last bank close in Shepperton High Street there has never been a more important time to support the local businesses. We visit the gold awarded Ash Link Nature Reserve and hear about saving Swans during the WW1 as well as taking a trip down memory lane to the 1970’s when local bar, The Ship, frequented by stars of the time, produced their own top 20 albums and singles of all time.
The Swan Sanctuary in Shepperton, one of the charities selected for support by this year’s Mayor, Cllr Vivienne Leighton, performs sterling work in looking after injured or sick swans and returning them to the river whenever possible.
As we head into the last part of 2017 and towards Big Tree Night (Wed.13th Dec) we can say it has been a challenging year for our High Street traders.

The passing of Tom Petty took one local back to his memories from the 1970’s of The Ship, as it was before it closed as a pub. Steve Kemp was involved in running the Barn Bar at the Ship. It ran from 1969-1978 when the pub was sold to a new licensee.
