Community Foodbank Extends Reach to Shepperton

The Community Foodbank at St Saviours Sunbury, now have eight collections of surplus waste food per week (at sell by date but not use by) producing over two and a half tons of food per month. Thanks to Tesco Sunbury extra, Aldi Feltham, Tesco on Staines Rd West.

The same referral process has now been extended to Shepperton, via schools, health centres and social services. Although this initiative is to be welcomed, it has resulted in an increased need for donations. We would also like to set up a collection point in shepperton. Please contact us if you have any ideas.

In the beginning of March we had a breakfast meeting serving surplus food, with a wide selection of Leaders drawn from local churches, Community Projects and Spelthorne Council. This was the official launch of this years ‘Love Sunbury’ project, the natural growth to what we did last year; with a further two events called ‘Joy at Kempton’ which part of this event is ‘Feeding of the 5000’.

On Saturday 16th June, the “Love Sunbury” project will see a couple of local Foodbank client’s houses get domestic improvements done by volunteers, as well as an extensive community clear up removing discarded rubbish, repairing and repainting fences, and planting. Donations and volunteers are in much need.

Sunday 17th June will see ‘Joy at Kempton’, a morning of celebration with song and music, featuring amongst others Sunbury’s very own “X Factor” star, Tracy Leanne. ‘The Feeding of the 5000’ at the same venue will be serving a lunch of surplus food. There is an urgent need for between 150-200 volunteers to help serve the meal.

As a Foodbank we know how much food poverty we have. We can also see a massive food waste issue not only locally but nationally and internationally. We are currently too small a charity to tackle this but we want to highlight locally that we can collect enough surplus food to feed 5000 well. Surely this has to be a good start.

The school Holiday initiative (the schools to highlight the families with the most need.)
From early September to late July schools provide the invaluable service of free meals for children of local families who cannot afford packed lunches. But for the six weeks of the summer holidays this service is not available. This means that many parents and guardians are struggling to provide their children (and themselves) with enough daily sustenance. We want to provide a helping hand to these families by giving them enough food for their lunches during the holidays.

We introduced this last year saw some 26 families given help during the school summer break. This year between July 23rd and September 2nd 2018 we estimate we will see some 50 families taking part in this essential support scheme. We are also looking to support these families for the whole holiday period with lunches and this year offer days out for families and activities to do in the summer. Please contact us about more information.

Community Food Bank
In collaboration with St Saviours Community Foodbank, Tesco’s Sunbury has a permanent food donation point in its store. Tesco Sunbury continues into its 2nd year with a permanent collection point in it’s store. This continues to help and provide the Community Foodbank with a supply of food provided by YOU the local community. We appreciate the support. We know this enables us to communicate the issues of food poverty to a wider audience. This also engages the wider community in the fight against food poverty locally.
Thank you for all you support.
