Shepperton club is game on!

By Monica Jones

Remember the days before the internet when families used to gather together and play games on a Saturday night? We reminisce fondly about regular inter-generational battles for supremacy in Risk, or land-owning domination in Monopoly, or just downright cheating in Scrabble!

Board games and cards are such a social thing to do. We may not all have ambitions to learn and play Bridge but do still enjoy a good game.

Well the latest social club we have discovered is the Shepperton Game Library. Run by avid game enthusiast Sarah Squire, it offers a chance of a social evening, whether you attend with friends, family or just by yourself.

A great array of games is out on show and there is a catalogue of what is available. The list keeps growing!

We attended the first event which was held at the Littleton Old School Building. The entry fee was only £5.50, and it was a BYO even-ing. There was a good atmosphere and most tables got through 3 or more different games in the 2-hour session. My table only just about managed two games as we were chatting too much! And that is also the point, meeting complete strangers, or maybe acquaintances, and finding out more about them. It turned out that someone on my table had had a career as a code breaker. Well, I never!

The next event was held at the Grizzly Bear in Nursery Road, Sunbury and was £4.50 entry. Both were well attended and lots of fun was had.

The next events are Saturday 11th November at Dawson Hall in Russell Road, Shepperton which is a BYO event. Or go to The Grizzly Bear on Saturday 2nd December and buy a drink there.

If you fancy arranging a games evening at home, you also have the chance to hire games from the Shepperton Game Library. There is a hire form online. Or you have the chance to sign up at various local events which they will be attending in the run up to Christmas:

Saturday December 2nd 10-4pm Shepperton Village Hall

Sunday December 10th 12-4pm Charlton Village Hall, Hetherington Road.

You can find Shepperton Game Library on Facebook so sign up and find out what events are planned. Events can be booked on Event-brite. Or have a look at their vast library online and select a few to play at home.

We wish this sociable community venture the very best of luck!
