Two World Championship Titles for Local Club

After a series of trials, 12 Acrobatic gymnasts from Spelthorne Gymnastics Club in Sunbury-on–Thames were selected to compete for Great Britain in the World Championships. The gymnasts train 6 days a week for 20+ hours, and after proving they are already at the top of their game in the UK it was time to hopefully show the rest of the World how hard they have worked.

On 28th February the age group gymnasts travelled to Baku in Azerbaijan to compete for Great Britain in the World Age Group Championships. Little did Ethan Law, Jack Clegg, Jake Turner and Cameron Patrick-Lothian, the 13-19 Men’s Group know that they were soon to become World Champions!

After qualifying for finals, they got the chance to perform their new combined routine, to the Aer-osmith song Dude (Looks like a lady). This fun and eye-catching routine scored a massive 28.840 and they won the gold medal and a World Champion title!! The boys hard work and commitment to acrobatic gymnastics certainly paid off and the 13-19 Men’s Group can now proudly say they are WORLD AGE GROUP CHAMPIONS.

On the 6th March it was the Senior Men’s Groups time to travel to Azerbaijan and show the world what they have got, and wow did they do that. Finlay Gray, Andrew Morris-Hunt, Bradley Gold and Archie Collier qualified for finals. With the Belgian and Israeli men’s groups to beat and in what some say the toughest category in acrobatics they scored an amazing 29.410 in their combined exercise and the title of SENIOR MENS GROUP WORLD CHAMPIONS! With a recent change by the FIG, the senior categories also get the oppor-tunity to get individual medals for Balance and Dynamic routines, and the boys finished of their competition experience with a Gold for their Dy-namic exercise and a Silver in their Balance exer-cise. Congratulations to both Men’s Groups on these amazing achievements, you couldn’t deserve it more and all your hard work has paid off! We would also like to extend our congratulations and thanks to their coach Adam McAssey, choreogra-pher Ellie Cooper and parents for helping them achieve this. Spelthorne has proved they are one of the leading clubs in Acrobatics in the country yet again!
