5th Sunbury on Thames Scout Group Needs Your Help!

5th Sunbury has provided scouting in Sun-bury for around 80 years. We urgently need help if we are to continue. Can you help? The 5th Sunbury has been based at various locations including the old Kennyngton Manor School and is currently at The Jun-gle, Ashridge Way. Over the years we have had up to 2 Scout troops and 2 Cub packs. When Beavers were first started, we opened our own colony which thrived over the years and produced a supply of chil-dren for the cub pack. We have always felt that we were seen as a family group with the leaders, helpers and supporters staying with us for years. I myself have been with the group for 41 years. Over the last few years we have seen a decline in the number of people coming forward to support the group although until recently we have maintained a supply of leaders to keep us viable. Last year we had to close our Beaver colony as the leader was running it on her own with a few parents helping. The leader then realised that she was overcommitted, with a young family as well as being a Rainbow leader. We have been told that the Scout leader will be leaving us in June this year, as his wife’s job is taking them out of the area. This will leave only an assistant leader and part time helper. Neither are able to take on the role Scout leader. We are currently operating with 6 adults and 1 young leader. This is not sustainable. If help does not firstly come to the Scout troop, it will be closing in June. If this happens it will bring into question whether the Cub pack can con-tinue. It would be a sorry state if 5th Sunbury were to close after 80 years. If there is anyone out there that would like to get involved or someone who has been in scouting and would like to return, I would be pleased to hear from them. The main thing to remember is that the ones who lose out are the children. Keith Spiers – Group Scout Leader 01932 787649/07905 673779 Keith510spiers@btinternet.com
