Village Matters

Through the eyes of a child

It was February 2014.

The Thames was in flood it was cold and misty. My family was very worried because our house was very close to being flooded by the torrential flow of the river.

One month had past and the water was inside our house. We had to evacuate and move accommodation, we rented out a little house that just about kept us warm so that we didn’t need to spend that much money and we could save some to pay for the damages of our house. All of my child hood toys were in that old house and all I managed to save were my little books from nursery.

A week later the water had dropped to normal height and we could finally get into the house, it was shocking, the water had got into the house about a meter deep and all the things that we tried to save were gone, all our life savings, memories, treasures all gone. We didn’t know what to do and together we decided to build a new house, meaning that we would have to knock down our old house. 13 years of decorating, working hard to pay for everything for the house, memories all gone because of a stupid flood.

So, we are going to build our house much higher then it was before, so we will be prepared in the future. I couldn’t spend much time with my mum and dad because they would always argue and not want to talk to anyone, all I had was my sister. She was more like a mum then anything, she would make me dinner, help with school, always sort out my problems. I was left on my own occasionally. I would go out with my friends or play games at home, always thinking, when will my life be normal again…
