If you are looking for a creative outlet, and might just be curious to set foot on the famous D’Oyly Carte Island of Gilbert and Sullivan operetta fame, then this is an opportunity for you to do both.
Artist Nicolene Grigg has opened a stunning studio on a wide beam canal boat which is moored at the end of the island. The dream emerged during Covid and became a reality only last autumn. Under the name Bristle and Rose Nicolene now runs small group art retreats where she encourages participants to find their creative voice. She teaches mixed media techniques which give anyone freedom to create. She also runs collage story classes, where participants will create collages which tell a personal story.
The barge is a magical place to spend a few hours. Having crossed the magnificent bridge over to D’Oyly Carte Island and followed the walkway, you arrive at the point of the island to the newly furnished barge. Onboard, you arrive into a cosy and welcoming snug where you can have coffee and read. The main studio is bright and airy with a large workspace for students. A wood burner takes the chill off on a cold morning and a large skylight bathes the interior with natural brightness. At the far end, a huge canvassed deck offers shelter from the elements, while allowing you to feel as if you are sitting right on the river. The sound of busy ducks, chirping coots and maybe the odd kingfisher calling as it flies by makes you feel as if you have stepped off the frantic treadmill of life and found stillness.
Nicolene describes a visit to her studio as a spa day for the mind.
There are a maximum 6 in a group. All materials are provided as is tea and coffee. Whether you are artistic or not, you will create some beautiful artwork to take home. What a great idea for a gift for a loved one too. You can buy gift cards online. The space is also available for corporate meetings and small private events and Nicolene and partner Mickey can provide catering.
