Village Matters

So who put up the Christmas trees?

Barbara Unsworth – Secretary Big Tree Night

As you walk or drive around our village you cannot help but notice the festive array of trees lit in all their glory in the High Street, 57 to be exact! And let’s not forget Big Tree itself! Unlike almost any other High Street locally, including Staines and Ashford, this is not down to the efforts of Spelthorne Council, far from it! From early September a handful of people, main-ly Carl Phillips, Chantal Mitchell and Rita Nunn coerce shopkeepers into agreeing to having a fully dressed tree erected above their shop in time for the festive season. On the 27th of November in the freezing cold wet weather 16 people, including a young helper called Josh…. showed up at the boatyard car park – Sandhills Meadow to dress the trees. Nigel Gray and his willing helper then spent many an hour over the weekend scaling ladders to erect the trees and then descending them again to sort the inevitable issues! These people are volunteers, receive no payment, except a mug of hot chocolate! I am sure they have better things to do with their Saturday morning but here they are, and it is with thanks that our High Street does indeed look festive!

A HUGE THANK YOU TO YOU ALL
