Duke of Edinburgh Award Legacy

What a legacy to have left the nation. The D of E awards have changed the lives of many young-sters. It may bring back memories for many, of lugging a huge back pack in the rain but the awards are universally credited with giving youngsters direction, self assurance confidence and discipline.

The Duke of Edinburgh awards were established in 1956. “If you can get a young person to succeed in one activity, then that feeling of success will spread over into many others” said the Duke.

These four happy smiling faces are the McCarthy children from Shepperton, who in the 1990’s were the first group of four siblings to be given their gold awards all at the same ceremony.
