A Man and His Shed

A man’s shed…The place he escapes to have a bit of time of his own, to think, to create…For many it is their little bit of sanctuary. But not everyone is lucky enough to have one, and actually a man’s shed still lacks in one thing – Company.

That is where the Men’s Shed initiative comes in and we have one in Shepperton. There are nearly 200 such initiatives in the UK now. Our local Men’s Shed is at The Greeno centre in a self contained converted garage. Local Mr Fixit Phil Mackenzie and side kick Richard Edgar have been working on creating a safe, welcoming and well equipped place where men can come along, do some DIY and tinkering and enjoy some camaraderie. The shed was officially opened in June this year and has been developing ever since. The council paid for electricity and lighting to be installed. Curchods paid for insurance and the Shepperton Residents Association made a cash donation. Many manual and electric tools have been donated, as well as wood and other materials.

The shed is open to any local men who fancy joining in and doing some DIY in company. They benefit from a well equipped place as well as expert help on hand to instruct in the use of some tools. Phil has many years of experience in DIY, having supported Age Concern offering practical help and services to the elderly. To be a member, you only need to join The Greeno centre which at £15 a year is a total bargain! The shed is open from 9-12 Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. At the moment you don’t need to book. Just turn up. Phil hopes to open every week day when member numbers increase, so don’t be shy!

As well as doing jobs for themselves, the shed undertakes small jobs which can be done on site; repairing broken furniture, sharpening tools and creating the odd piece for the garden using reclaimed wood. This is all charged out at only £10 per hour and all funds go back into the running of the shed.

Phil is on the look out for more members, but also anyone who may have experience working with the sort of machines on site and who could join him as a supervisor. He is also happy to be contacted about small jobs.

The Men in Sheds initiative has been a lifeline to many men who start retirement wondering what to do with their time. The shed gives them a place to mix with others, chat and use their practical skills in a meaningful and rewarding way.

Phil and Richard received awards from VAIS (Voluntary Action in Spelthorne) for their work in making the shed happen. Very well deserved too!

Phil looks forward to welcoming many more members to the facility. He can be contacted on 07765 410551 or email pm1944@gmail.com.
